Concerning Animals
Often Paul’s companion on his landscape photography expeditions in the Peak District, Spadger, the dog, became the starting point of a project that turned out to be a critique of our relationship to animals and pets. It also marked Paul’s departure from black and white photography into colour. This led to Concerning Animal – Pets Don’t Buy Things that consisted of colour photography experiments with Polaroids and still-lives that became a meditation on how human beings ‘see’ animals as surrogates of themselves, instead of recently domesticated wild creatures.
