Paul became a freelance newspaper and magazine photographer in 1965, and these Documentary images were made before he became a full-time polytechnic lecturer in 1974. As well as working for newspapers, like the Guardian and Observer, he also undertook during this period personal documentary projects, such the one on Appleby Gypsy Fair. Original ways of visually telling a story became the hallmark of his Photo-Essays
